Icarus, Henri Matisse (1946)

In the final decades of his life, Matisse invented a new form of art, the cut-out. Working with scissors and sheets of gouache-painted paper, he cut various shapes—from the organic to the geometric—and arranged them into lively compositions. 

For Matisse, this work related to the Greek myth of Icarus who 'with a passionate red heart falls out of the starry sky'. This may be in relation to Matisse’s concerns for his wife, daughter and son, who were involved with the Resistance.
